IMPROTECH centre-half Lucas Reed has joined Middlesbrough FC Academy on a two-year contract.
The Kepier Academy player put himself on Boro’s radar after impressing for Improtech Under 15’s Elite team in a friendly game.
And after playing against Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers with Middlesbrough’s Under 16’s he was offered the contract with a view to going on to a scholarship.
Lucas, who has previously been on trials at Sunderland AFC and Newcastle United, has been a key player for the Improtech Elite team this year playing Academy sides.
He was due to go down to Fleetwood Town after making a good impression when playing against them in December, but Boro have now stepped in to offer an exciting route into the professional game.
Lucas is a centre-back with Improtech, although Middlesborough play him at left-back. His progress is all the more impressive given he has only been a defender for the past 18 months, having previously played as a number 10.
He has been with Improtech for seven years and joined Kepier Academy four years ago when he went into Year Seven.
The South Tynesider is excellent at stepping out from the back, good in the air and reads the game well, particularly when it comes to stepping in and winning the ball.
Improtech coach Stuart Brand said: “We all delighted for Lucas because he is so committed – he does extra work with his grandad Jim, puts the hour in when it comes to strength and conditioning and has regular one-on-one sessions with myself.
“He has excellent dedication and drive and it is those qualities which have got him the chance he fully deserves.”
- Improtech Soccer has an exceptional track record of taking young but dedicated and gifted players and working intensively with them to improve their technique, bringing out the best in them to the point where they have the best possible chance of making a career from football.
